Why BIR Online Tools Works Offline and How Syncing Works

·3 mins

BIR Online Tools works fully offline for everyday use — adding a company, filling out QAP or SAWT forms, and generating DAT files or BIR Form 2307 certificates all happen against a local database in your browser, not a live server round-trip. This guide explains why that’s true, and separately, how syncing that data to the cloud and to other devices works as a different capability.

This guide is part of the App Guide series and is a plain-language explainer rather than a step-by-step walkthrough.

Why does the app keep working with no internet? #

BIR Online Tools is built offline-first: every read and write in the app goes to a local database that runs inside your own browser before anything touches a server. When you add a company, fill in a QAP template, or build a Form 2307 certificate, that data is saved to your device immediately — the app doesn’t wait for a network round-trip to confirm your change worked, because the change already happened locally.

This is why every screenshot in this App Guide series — company profiles, QAP/SAWT/RELIEF validation, saved DAT files — works the same whether or not the browser has a live connection at that moment.

What does “cloud sync” actually add? #

Separately from local storage, BIR Online Tools can back up your local data to your account on our servers, so it’s reachable from a second device. This sync happens in the background using your account’s sign-in credentials, and access is scoped so only your account can read or write your own companies’ data.

Cloud sync is what makes a company profile you add on your laptop show up on your phone, and what protects your DAT files and certificates if your device is lost, reset, or its browser storage is cleared.

Offline-first vs. cloud sync, side by side #

Works with no internet?
Adding/editing a companyYes
Filling out and validating QAP/SAWT/RELIEF templatesYes
Building a Form 2307 certificate and emailing itNo (email send needs a connection)
Syncing data to the cloud or another deviceNo (sync needs a connection)

Frequently asked questions #

Does BIR Online Tools need an internet connection to work? #

No, not for day-to-day use. Company profiles, DAT file generation, and certificate building all read and write to a local, browser-based database first, so the app keeps working normally with no connection.

Is my data safe if I never connect to the internet? #

Yes for the device you’re using — your data is saved to that browser’s local storage the moment you make a change. What offline use does not give you is a backup on BIR Online Tools’ servers or access from a second device, which requires cloud sync.

How does BIR Online Tools keep my data secure when it syncs to the cloud? #

Sync runs in the background using your account’s sign-in credentials, and access is scoped so only your account can read or write your own companies’ data on the server.

What happens to my data if I lose my device without ever syncing? #

Any company profiles, DAT files, or certificates that were never synced to the cloud exist only in that browser’s local storage, so losing the device, clearing browser data, or switching browsers before that data ever syncs means it’s not recoverable from BIR Online Tools’ servers.

Summary #

BIR Online Tools separates two things that are easy to conflate: working without internet (true for every account, because the app is built on a local-first database) and backing your data up to the cloud so it survives device loss and reaches your other devices (a separate sync capability that runs in the background using your account’s sign-in credentials).
